What They Say
DVB has added the Chinese AVS3 codec to its core specifications. The codec is said to be optimised for 8K and the DVB-AVC includes 8K conformance points as well as HFR in addition to the baseline UltrHD support. This builds on the work that DVB on VVC (DVB adds VVC to its Video Coding Toolbox).
DVB is still working on support for the AV1 codec.
What We Think
Reuters reported that EU anti-trust authorities are investigating the video licensing policy of Alliance for Open Media, a group that counts Google, Amazon.com, Apple and Meta Platforms as members. AOM is developing AV1. (Alliance for Open Media Officially Releases AV1 Specification)
The European Commission says it has “information that AOM and its members may be imposing licensing terms (mandatory royalty-free cross licensing) on innovators that were not a part of AOM at the time of the creation of the AV1 technical, but whose patents are deemed essential to (its) technical specifications.”
That approach might block those who want to compete with the AV1 specification, the EC says. (BR)
