Apple to Work with TSMC on Microdisplays

What They Say

Nikkei reported that Apple is to work with TSMC on the manufacture of microdisplays using OLED technology at a ‘secretive’ facility in Taiwan. The report said that the project is now at the trial production phase at a complex in the Longtan district of Taoyuan. The report said that microLED is also being developed there and that the firm has hired ‘dozens’ of staff from AUO as well as experts from Japan and elsewhere.

According to the Nikkei, all staff have strict NDAs that preclude even meeting friends or acquaintances from the technology industry.

Apple is said to have posted job advertisements looking for people with “expertise in operating OLED vacuum evaporation equipment, packaging and testing equipment, and measurement equipment”.

What We Think

Well, OLED microdisplays for AR would need silicon backplanes of high quality and there are not many better potential partners than TSMC and few better places to develop the technology than Taiwan. Separately, it was reported a couple of days ago that Apple will account for 53% of the production of 5nm chips in 2021. (BR)
