What They Say
The Apple event on the 14th revealed pretty well what was expected. The iPhone 13 continues with the same sized displays, but with ‘Ceramic Shield’ front coverings and with new ‘Super Retina XDR’ displays with 800 cd/m² when used outdoors and peak brightness of 1200 cd/m² in HDR applications, will being more efficient in terms of power. Apple said that battery life is improved by 2.5 hours on the iPhone 13 and 1.5 hours on the Mini. The camera has been improved and there is a new feature for improving bokeh and making depth of field adjustable after the capture of video.
There is a new chip, the A15 Bionic which uses 5nm technology and has nearly 15 billion transistors. It is said to be up to 50% faster than competitive chips, while the GPU is said to be 30% better than others.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have the same chips with up to a TB of storage and have adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. Outdoor brightness is 1000 cd/m² and the displays have the same ‘Ceramic Shield protection’.
As expected the Apple Watch Series 7 has bigger displays (41mm/45mm) with a ‘stronger, more crack-resistant front crystal’ that is said to be 50% thicker. No shipping date was announced except ‘later this fall’, adding credibility to the reports of supply chain issues with the product.
The iPad 9th Generation has the A13 Bionic chip (20% faster) and a 10.2″ display that has a new ambient light sensor and ‘True Tone’ to automatically adjust to match the colour temperature of ambient light. It is available immideately. THere isa also a new iPad mini with an 8.3″ display with 500 cd/m² of brightness.
What We Think
The iPad mini has the A15 processor, and costs 50% more than the iPad which is described as ‘surprisingly affordable’. (BR)
