Apple & Samsung Discuss e-SIMs

Apple and Samsung are reported by the Financial Times to be working on a new e-SIM technology that will mean that services can be changed on a mobile phone without the need for a physical SIM. The GSMA is working on a standard and a number of major operators are said to be in favour of the change. Apple is said to have something similar in the US and this may continue alongside the standard.

I have had “fun” with lost and wrong sized SIMs on my travels, so I ought to be positive about this move. However, I have no expectation that the operators will work to make it easier for me to run a multitude of different services in different parts of the world, so I find myself with mixed views about eliminating the humble SIM.
