What They Say
The Elec reports that Samsung is supplying the displays for three of the new iPhone 12 models (Mini, Pro, Pro Max), with LG Display supplying OLED panels for the 6.1-inch iPhone 12. The report suggests that 70 million finished units are expected to be produced by the end of the year and that of the panel production (estimated at 80 million) will be split with 75% going to Samsung. That’s a small increase for Samsung over last year, but a jump from 5 million to 20 million for LG Display.
What We Think
Apple has had a long and close relationship with LG Display and the company will be bound to be reducing its dependency on Samsung as a supplier. That LG is getting so much more volume and can meet Apple’s qualification processes is good news for the competitiveness of the market. (BR)
