Apple iPhone 14 is as Expected – but it’s Bright, as is a new Watch

What They Say

Apple held its big iPhone 14 launch and the smartphones seem to have been pretty much as expected.

  • No ‘mini’ with a bigger 6.7″ model replacing it as a more affordable new model
  • The Pro model boosts peak output to 2,000 cd/m² (from 1,200) and LTPO is used. Resolution is very slightly different at 1179 x 2556 v 1170 x 2532.
  • The Plus model has slightly more resolution as the size has gone up from 6.1″ to 6.7″, 1284 x 2778 pixels v 1170 x 2532 but with the same output.
  • The cut out is, externally, still a ‘slot’ as Apple didn’t like the look of separate apertures for different sensors – it was not good for the UI
  • There’s a new 48mp sensor but still no support for 8K video capture.

The Apple Watch saw some changes, with a very bright new Apple Watch Ultra with up to 36 hours battery life and a low power mode that can stretch that to 60. Peak brightness is 2,000 cd/m² (doubled from previous models) and the unit has a 49mm titanium case. It will cost $799.

The Apple Watch Series 8 costs $399 and has a 1,000 cd/m² OLED of 1.9″ with 484 x 396 pixels (326ppi) and with Ion-X strengthened glass. (unchanged from Series 7)

There’s a new SE watch at $249 (GPS only) or $299 (GPS + cell) available in 44mm or 40mm sizes. I couldn’t dig out the resolution at press time. Apple does not like to confuse its customers with specifications!

What We Think

As expected, crash detection and emergency satellite connection were added to the iPhone but the main upgrade is the extra peak brightness (typical is still the same) and the use of LTPO which should help with battery life. (BR)
