Apple, Google and Samsung May Have Big Smartwatch Plans for 2022

What They Say

C|Net had a round-up of speculation about changes in smartwatches in 2022. The blog said that there could be an Apple Watch for extreme sports and the first smartwatch from Google (although it owns Fitbit). It also reported on an expected Apple Watch Series 8 which may arrive this autumn and include a body temperature sensor.

The blog speculates that an updated Watch SE (last updated in 2020) might include an ‘always-on’ display.

It quotes SamMobile as saying that the next Galaxy Watch 5 from Samsung may have a bigger battery and a temperature sensor.

A Google smartwatch might have a round display, based on leaks, while the next Fitbit watch may move from its own Fitbit OS software to Wear OS which might improve the user experience.

What We Think

There is no discussion of new displays for these devices. Smartwatch displays seem to have settled to a level of performance that would probably benefit from improvements in power consumption or from new OLED materials, but otherwise not seeing many changes. It does occur to me that as purely a single user display, the application might be one to see a real benefit from an AS3D display, especially as the viewing distance will be tightly limited. (BR)
