What They Say
The Information’s Reality Check reported that Apple’s anticipated augmented reality headset will rely on connecting to an iPhone (or other device) to work, rather than being a stand-alone device. The article quoted Bloomberg as saying last year that there had been a battle within Apple on this topic.
The chip for the headset is to be made by TSMC and is said to have reached tape-out although it may not go into volume production with TSMC’s current level of chip features.
What We Think
I wondered about including this article partly because it would be surprising if TSMC was not the chip maker. Further, it’s hard to imagine that early adopters of the AR headset will not be Apple fans and will therefore already have iPhones. The challenges of heat and power if you put everything in the headset are the reason why I have been in the ‘split’ camp for some time. However, the Oculus Quest 2 has shown that integrated devices are popular. But then I’m a geek and had a modular Hi-fi! (BR)
