Apple Files Patent for AR Windscreens in Autonomous Vehicles

Apple

A new patent filed by Apple has emerged, this time for an AR windscreen for self-driving vehicles that would display information including speed, road conditions and navigation.

The patent application also details vehicle-to-vehicle FaceTime calling and a system designed to detect passengers’ stress levels by measuring, among other things, body temperature, heart rate and breathing rate, displaying a visualisation to calm them down if it detects that they’re panicking.

The news that Apple was moving into the autonomous vehicle market first broke two years ago. More recently, an Apple patent detailed the use of virtual reality technology to reduce motion sickness for passengers in self-driving cars.

Analyst Comment

A while ago, it looked as though Apple was going to give up its project to get into autos as a number of engineers were fired, but a respected financial analyst believes that the company is headed that way again, believing that it has a genuine opportunity based on its confidence that it can provide a better experience than others from the IT world and those in the automotive business. The company has hired experienced executives from the automotive sector. (BR)
