What They Say
Apple is rumoured to be developing a foldable iPhone that uses an E Ink panel for the external display to minimise the power consumption. Some sources have also suggested that the firm might use an E-Ink display for the main display.
What We Think
Clearly, whoever said that Apple might use an E Ink display for the main display has never seen a colour E Ink display in action! The development of colour by the firm has been impressive, but the results in an iPhone context are not. There are plenty of applications where a colour E Ink display makes sense and as the outside display in an ‘always on, zero power’ way might make a lot of sense, but the lack of decent video support would be a killer as a main display. There have been several attempts to develop phones with E Ink secondary displays, but none that have really been commercially significant. Forcing the phone to be opened for any videos or animation may not be good for Apple.
(of course, Apple has a great reputation for managing its information. This could be the kind of leak that is intended to identify where the information came from!)
Separately, I noted an article that said that you can no longer buy books with the Kindle App for Android, apparently because Google wants a 30% cut on the sale. I guess Amazon will make 100% of zero purchases now! (BR)
