Apple is reportedly developing a new AR/VR headset with an “8K” resolution per eye, to be launched in 2020, according to an anonymous individual “familiar with Apple’s plans”. The device will apparently feature inside-out tracking and be powered by a dedicated host device with custom Apple processing hardware, transmitting to the headset wirelessly over a 60GHz connection.

Of course, as we reported, Google said at SID last year that it is working on headsets with 20 MP per eye. However, the number of megapixels would depend partly on the aspect ratio. A VR headset typically has a square display, but if you were making a mixed reality headset with a wide field of view, you might use a wide display aspect ratio, so the idea of 8K wouldn’t tell you the pixel count.
