Android Pie Works with (and Restricts) Notch-Design Smartphone Displays

Android Pie — the official name for the next major update to Google’s mobile operating system — is now rolling out to select devices. Among many new features, the status bar has been split, moving the time display from the top-right corner of the screen to the top-left, to cater for devices that feature displays with a notch design, akin to the iPhone X, like Huawei’s P20 Pro.

Pie will also enable app developers to optimise their software to either display content around any cut-out or keep the window square, altogether separate from the status bar and notch.

Additionally, Google has laid down rules for Android device makers regarding notch designs. Handsets will only be allowed to feature a maximum of two notches, at the top or bottom of the screen. Notches on the left or right-hand sides of the screen will not be allowed.
