Amazon Has Patented an Augmented Reality Mirror

A patent filed by Amazon has revealed that the company is developing an augmented reality mirror, designed to allow consumers to try on virtual clothes.

According to the patent, the system uses cameras, projectors, mirrors, displays and lights to superimpose virtual clothes onto an image or a person in their chosen AR environment, which the report refers to as “blended reality”. The clothing can then follow you around the scene, similar to the photo filter overlays used by Snapchat and Facebook.

The new concept bears some similarity to Amazon’s own Echo Look device, an Alexa voice-controlled camera that takes full-length photographs of outfits, allowing users to create their own “look book”. Amazon Echo Look is currently only available by invitation.

Amazon has declined to comment on the patent revelation.
