Sandvine, a provider of network intelligence solutions, has released a report indicating that video represents almost 58% of total global downstream internet traffic. In addition, Netflix is responsible for 15% of overall downstream traffic, not just that used for video content.
VP of marketing Cam Cullen remarked, “The numbers for video are going to get higher as more and more content goes high definition and users turn more to Ultra HD”.
The report also reveals that gaming is becoming a significant force in traffic volume as gaming downloads, Twitch streaming and professional gaming go mainstream. Web browsing and social media account for 17% and 5.1% of downstream traffic respectively.
