A research team within Adobe has developed a new virtual reality system designed to trick a person into thinking they have unlimited space to walk around, free of obstacles.
The system uses sensors to map the floor plan of a room and any objects within it. Combined with the rapid, unconscious eye movements of the user, it adjusts the orientation of the virtual environment to prevent them from bumping into things, without them noticing. The scale of the virtual environment that can be explored depends on the size of the room itself.
Adobe researcher Qi Sun says, “Almost no users noticed any difference between this and the version without redirection, and it does not introduce any discomfort or nausea”.
