Acer Introduces Gaming Notebook with Switchable AS3D

What They Say

A hat-tip to graphics guru Dr Jon Peddie for pointing me to a new Acer notebook, the Predator Helios 300, that features a 15.6″ autostereo switchable LC lenticular lens on top of the UltraHD panel.

Specifications include Intel’s 12th Gen Core i9 processors, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 32GB of DDR5 RAM clocked at 4,800MHz, and PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs. As for ports, it includes an HDMI 2.1 port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. It’ll be available in the US in Q4 2022 starting at $3,399.99.

Other new models include a 14″ model with an Nvidia GPU and an optional 16:10 OLED display for release in July and a 16″, the Predator Triton 300 SE model PT316-51s-7362, notebook that will have a 240Hz IPS 2560 x 1600 display.

What We Think

The display on the notebook is mistakenly described as WQXGA, when its a WUXGA, I think – although I hate these acronyms! I remember once at Display Week a firm (I think it was NEC) using the WXGA term on displays with 1280 x 720, 1366 x 768 and 1450 x 800, I think on the same booth.

The switchable autostereo technology using LC lenses has been around for many years but has not caught on before. However with UltraHD displays, the performance should be better than before and with a notebook you have a good opportunity to optimise the viewing position so it could give a good result. (BR)
