What They Say
Acer made a large number of new product announcements last week. One that particularly caught the eye was the ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition notebook which adds an autostereoscopic 3D (AS3D) display to a ‘mobile workstation’ based on the latest Intel 11th Gen Core processors and with graphics up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU.
The system uses dual cameras to track eye positions and calculate the optimum stereo views which are displayed using lenticular lenses bonded to the LCD panel. The 15.6″ UltraHD IPS panel has 100% coverage of AdobeRGB, is Pantone validated for colour and has a Delta E average of less than 2. Outputs include dual USB Type C with Thunderbolt 4 and both a DisplayPort 1.4 and an HDMI 2.1 port.
The notebook will start to sell in December in Europe at €3,599 and in 2022 in the US.
What We Think
The Verge had an early look at this technology a few months ago. It found the integration of the tracking, rendering and display to be quite good. The system is intended to allow the use of the notebook display in 3D will simultaneously designing using an external 2D display. The concept of this kind of 3D display has been around for a very long time, but the availability of relatively small UltraHD displays helps to deliver the kind of dot density needed to still give good results and the improvements in tracking can really help.
