Quarter of a Billion Connected Cars by 2020, Says Gartner

There will be more than a quarter of a billion connected cars on the road by 2020, making them a major element in the Internet of Things, says Gartner. The IoT will grow 30% this year, to 4.9 billion connected devices. By 2020, that number will reach 25 billion.

The increased consumption and creation of digital content within the vehicle will drive the need for more sophisticated infotainment systems, creating opportunities for application processors, graphics accelerators, displays and human-machine interface technologies”, said Gartner’s James Hines.

About 20% of vehicles worldwide are expected to possess some form of wireless network connection by 2020 – representing more than 250 million vehicles. This spread will have implications across the major functional areas of telematics, automated driving, infotainment and mobility services.
