Acer Still Sees Opportunities in Smartphones

At a supply chain conference in January, Acer CEO Jason Chen said that the company will continue to look for business opportunities in the smartphone market.

The smartphone business is not profitable for Acer yet, and the company was approached by ‘a high-end smartphone vendor’ to discuss an acquisition – but Chen said that, while a merger has not been ruled out, it is currently ‘business as usual’.

Acer plans to launch Windows Phone smartphones this year, showcasing them at MWC in March. The phones will support Acer’s Build Your Own Cloud platform. Chen also said that the company will focus on the entry-level segment, rather than premium smartphones, concentrating on getting its devices into more countries.
