At the recent Augmented World Expo 2018 held in Santa Clara, California, an AR headset was exhibited by start-up company nreal Technology Co., Ltd. (Beijing, China). It is pictured in the figure below.
At this time, there is little posted information available about either the product or the company. As a result, this article is, necessarily just a “heads-up” to Meko newsletter readers on the existence of the Nreal headset.
At the exhibit, company founder Chi Xu demonstrated the headset by showing a short movie and allowing wearers to play a 2D video game.
A post made by one reviewer from Next Reality that had a chance the test the headset on an earlier occasion reported that “The experience included unreliable tracking, an extremely tiny field of view and some latency issues.” He went on to say that “This is a great looking AR headset, but considering the current competition, it is just not ready primetime yet.” The great looking comment derived, in part, from the observation that the headset is physically compact and will come in a variety of colors.
When asked when the device will be commercially abvailable, Xu did not offer firm release date. -Arthur Berman
