AMD has told PCR that its upcoming Freesync (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 4) gaming monitors will be between $80 and $100 cheaper than models with Nvidia’s G-Sync technology. Both aim to eliminate screen tearing, input lag and stutter.
Richard Huddy of AMD has previously said that he would have been “surprised” if Freesync added more than $10 or $20 to a monitor’s bill of materials. He told PCR that, in fact, it adds nothing: “[The free IP] means that FreeSync monitors, if they are built to a higher quality, will cost more but there is no licence fee associated with it. And it turns out that actually there’s no extra bill of materials in the case of any monitors I’m aware of”.
