What They Say
DXOMark had a good look at the Google Pixel 7.
The site rated the display performance as ‘excellent… for its segment’ and an improvement from the Pixel 6. It was close to the best score in the Friends & Family use case and is in the top ten of all tested phones. The testers particularly liked the HDR performance. It was best in the $400 to $600 segment and overall was sixth. It made these suggestions for improvements:
- Short duration of brightness boost when outdoors, affecting readability
- Low screen brightness when watching SDR videos
- Visible color shifts on the screen when holding the device at an angle
The handset has excellent camera performance, average audio for the high-end segment but below average battery performance.
What We Think
There is quite a lot of detail in the link to the display test results. IN particular there is an issue of ‘ alternating pink and blue stripes as the viewing angle changes’ at different viewing angles. (see the image below). OLEDs have historically had the reputation of great viewing angles and compared to less good LCDs, they are dramatically better, but they are not without their ‘quirks’. (BR)
