What They Say
Samsung Electronics has a new 55″ 1000R curved UltraHD gaming display with 165Hz refresh and a new controller. The ‘Quantum miniLED’ backlight has 14 bits of control and Samsung said that the Neural Quantum Processor Ultra “takes content quality to new heights by using data generated from 20 neural networks … when upscaling to 4K”. VRR is supported with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.
Output is 600 cd/m² from the VA panel and there is support for HDR10+ and what Samsung calls “Quantum HDR 2000” (whatever that is!). Colour coverage is 95% of DCI P3 (no value is quoted for sRGB, surprisingly) and the panel has QDs in there, somewhere.
The display has 60 2.2.2 audio and is claimed to output down to 45Hz using two central sub-woofers.
Highlighting that the set is very much aimed at console and TV-type applications, the monitor has four HDMI ports, but no DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt.
The set costs $3,500 in the US.
What We Think
For a solo gamer, this set looks like a good purchase, but I’m not rushing to get one! I was persuaded to try a curved display at a show for gaming a few years ago and it certainly increases the immersion. My good friend and fanatical gamer, Jon Peddie, has a 49″ curved display (iirc) and he loves it. (BR)
