Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that he thinks there will be multiple MR headsets starting with an expensive high end device, and then with two further versions, one at a lower price that might arrive in the first half of 2025 and could drive volumes to 10 million units.
According to Kuo, a critical component is the pancake lens. The MR headset will feature pancake lenses manufactured by Genius, with a few of the lenses created by Young Optics. The lenses will be laminated by GIS. The two 3P pancake modules (one for each eye) will cost around $30-$40, Kuo said.
Largan will likely be a new supplier of the oancake lens for the second-generation Apple AR/MR headset and expand production capacity for this order in its new Taichung plant.
What We Think
Of course, Apple when it introduced the iPhone, spent a lot to get the touch it wanted and that seemed crazy at the time, but it proved to be the right thing to do. I always see Apple as insisting that you have to have what it considers the correct solution, but then you have to pay the price. (BR)
