Omdia: Global notebook PC shipments will resume growth in 2023 if Russia-Ukraine War concludes in 2022 (2)

What They Say

Omdia posted a blog post that included the firm’s mobile PC forecast for 2021-27. The firm said that it thinks that notebook PC shipments will return to positive growth of 1.0% in 2023 if the Russia-Ukraine war can be successfully concluded by end of 2022.

The blog said that:

“Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality (VR/MR) is set to become the driving force for future notebook growth particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) market.”

What We Think

Hmmm.. I find it hard to believe either the statement about VR driving notebook growth in the EV market! I have reached out to Omdia to get some clarification. However, it seems clear that Omdia doesn’t see much action in notebooks for the next few years. The comment about the Ukraine war ending by the end of the year look unrealistic to me, too. Russia failed in its Blitzkrieg and has settled in for a long grinding war of attrition. Ukraine looks unlikely to roll over and is likely to be sustained by Nato to ensure that doesn’t happen, so I suspect this one will just grind on and on unless Putin disappears from the scene. (BR)
