What They Say
DSCC published a blog report of the MicroLED and MiniLED section of the SID/DSCC Business Conference.
The article looks at
- the cost and penetration forecast for miniLED. (in his talk, Leo Liu of DSCC highlighted that the area of LEDs in a 12.9″ iPad Pro is around 200mm², compared to 1.8mm² on the edge LEDs in an iPad Air).
- Smartkem’s talk on its OTFTs that can be used to create active matrix backplanes for LEDs. He also described a Pseudo CMOS technology that can be used to create complex circuits using OTFTs such as ‘gate-on-array’.
- Rohinni talked about its cartridge-based pick and place technology
- Mojo Vision talked about its microLEDs which have been made up to 28K ppi with 0,6? pixels and with claimed high efficiency in RGB
- Porotech talked about its microLEDs that have tunable colours.and its RGB using GaN technology
What We Think
I meant to run this article last week. If you are involved in microLED, this is a good summary of the session. DSCC has been doing a good job of picking vendors that might have disruptive technologies. However, if Plasmonic PHOLED can do what its propenents believe, the time of arrival of microLED in sparse matrix architectures may be somewhat delayed. (BR)
