What They Say
I wrote my early news on CES quite early (Highlights of Early CES 2022 Display News) as some of the conferences were going on and my article didn’t mention the new 98″ UltraHD Google TV set that TCL announced, although Sweta mentioned it yesterday. It is expected to cost around $8,000. TCL also showed its 85″ 8K X925 Pro with the third generation of the firm’s miniLED backlight technology. The model uses an UltraHD panel in Europe, but will have 8K in the US. TCL said that it will really push its larger sets in the US.
The 8K Association’s Chris Chinnock has published a couple of short videos on the TCL and Hisense 8K offerings at CES. The Association has set up an 8K channel on YouTube.
Also on the topic of 8K, a hat-tip to Jon Peddie who spotted this article that looks at whether 8K is visible in normal viewing. The article quotes various scientists (but doesn’t look at the research done by NHK that showed that whatever the acuity calculations are, some viewers perceive a difference in how real images look at very high CPD levels – and one of the reasons that 8K was chosen by NHK.)
What We Think
At CES, TCL highlighted the Pixelworks TrueCut Motion processing in some its sets. Originally, this branding seemed just to be applied to production tools developed by the firm (HFR is Not a Dirty Word – At Least it Shouldn’t be) but is now being expanded to include the motion processing of images. That is a challenge, especially, I think, with 8K displays but I wonder if using the same term for both production tools and display processing might ‘muddy the water’ for Pixelworks? (BR)
