What They Say
SES has extended the provision of its German HD+ service to IP only subscribers. The service provides 50 HD channels for €6 per month. There is also an option for HD+ ToGo which extends access to smartphones and tablets for €5 per month.
Owners of new Panasonic TVs from December will get a free trial of the service and Panasonic is described as the ‘initial’ smartTV partner. Others are expected to follow in supporting the service.
What We Think
I had to double check. The service costs €6 per month or €75 per year. Hmmm…. perhaps I’m missing something! It’s rare to see an annual subscription for more money than a monthly one.
A few years ago it would have been hard to have imagined SES, the driver in many ways of the success of DTH satellite in Europe in particular, offering an IP-based TV service that has no need for satellites at all. Still, it’s a sign of the times and, perhaps, an inflection point for the industry. (BR)
