What They Say
Bloomberg said in its Power On subscription newsletter that it believes that Apple is working on putting Face ID in (or under) the display, but will not put in-screen Touch ID in the flagship phones, despite having tested it. The newsletter suggests that there are two alternatives:
- The pricier models could have in-screen Face ID, while the low-end have Face ID in the notch.
- The high-end phones still get in-screen Face ID, while the low-end get in-screen Touch ID.
What We Think
As we have written when covering OTI Lumionics (e.g. Materials Remain Important for Under-Display Cameras), under camera operation of Face ID is particularly challenging. The infrared light used to illuminate the face and enable the depth perception needed for avoiding ‘spoofing’ with flat images, has to pass through the display twice rather than just once as it does with cameras.
