Valve Can’t Be Counted Out of VR Hardware Race

The Verge tried out the new Steam Deck handheld console from Valve that’s due later in the year or early 2022 and pointed out that it’s a lot bigger than a Nintendo Switch. Valve also plans a dock to allow connection to TVs although the internal display has only 720p resolution.

Talking to a member of staff at Steam about the console and its custom APU, the Verge asked about the use of the APU in a stand-alone VR headset, like the Oculus Quest. He said he loved the question.

“We’re not ready to say anything about it, but it would run well in that environment, with the TDP necessary… it’s very relevant to us and our future plans,”

he said.

What We Think

Oculus should expect to see potential competitors now that it has established that the stand-alone category of headset is probably the optimum. (BR)
