Sharp Reportedly Supplying Nintendo with LCD Displays for New Console

Nintendo Switch

Bloomberg is reporting Sharp announced it is manufacturing liquid crystal displays for an upcoming gaming console, sparking rumors that it could be for an updated version of Nintendo’s popular Switch console. Sharp CEO Robert Wu stated that the company is working closely with an unnamed firm, from the console’s research and development stage through to pilot production of LCD panels this fiscal year. Investors expect Nintendo to refresh its six-year-old Switch console in the next fiscal year, which could boost its lagging stock. Nintendo projects sales of 15 million Switch units this fiscal year, reflecting a decline as the console faces competition from newer rivals like Sony’s PS5.

Nintendo Switch: Game Changer

The Nintendo Switch has took the gaming world by storm when it was released in 2017. As of March 31, 2023, the console has sold a staggering 125.62 million units worldwide, solidifying its position as the best-selling video game console of all time, surpassing even the beloved Wii in 2022.

The Nintendo Switch’s impact extends beyond its impressive sales figures. The console’s release revitalized Nintendo, propelling the company back into profitability and solidifying its position as a major player in the gaming industry. The success of the Switch can be attributed to its ability to cater to a wide audience, appealing to both casual and hardcore gamers. Its affordability, combined with the convenience of playing games on the go, has made it an attractive choice for gamers worldwide.
