What They Say
UploadVR has been tracking the next version of the PlayStation VR headset and said that the unit will have:
- Resolution of 4000×2040 pixels, or 4.1 megapixels (2000×2040) per eye.
- Head-mounted haptics, in which a headset motor would provide direct haptic feedback (vibrations and rumbling) to the head/face.
- Eye-tracking capable of foveated rendering.
- Inside-out tracking, or onboard cameras to track its location and controllers.
- Dial to adjust the IPD, or distance between the lenses.
- A single USB-C tether to the PS5.
What We Think
Sony is expected to release the new headset in 2022, some six years after the first version – a game console pace of change, rather than that of a PC or smartphone.
The PlayStation 5 continues to be in short supply woth typical deliveries a few weeks from order. Bloomberg reported that supply will continue to be tight until 2022. It is reported to have sold 7.8 million units in the year to the end of March with plans to sell 14.8 million in the year to March 2022. The PS 4 is reported to have sold 115.9 million, cumulatively. Nintendo is also struggling with supply, but expects to ship 25.5 million Switch units this year, although management is reported to have plans to make 28-29 million. (BR)
