ILM Explains Stagecraft Virtual Production Tools

What They Say

Industrial Light & Magic released a video showing how its Stagecraft virtual production technology was used on the Mandalorian Season Two to accelerate and more accurately control production. The system relies on enclosing LED video walls around the action, including on the ceiling. Sets can be built completely virtually or, if there are later creative decisions to be made, blue or green screens can be added at any point.

What We Think

If you have 7 minutes and you like movies or 3D graphics, this is worth a look. I was particularly interested to hear the comment that being in a virtual environment rather than just in front of a green screen changed how actors related to the content. That’s hard to quantify, but must be really really helpful for directors.

It’s interesting that in the video, the ‘sky’ display often looks different in colour to the ‘walls’. It would be interesting to know if this was because the camera used was not at a point that was optimised, or whether this kind of difference is dealt with in post-production. (BR)
