Micledi Microdisplays bv of Belgium, a spin-out from Imec, has closed a second round of funding, totalling €7 million, a year after its last one (MICLEDI Microdisplays Raises EUR 4.5M). The second round is intended to finance a move from the pilot line technology development to product design and subsequently to the manufacturing phase for its native RGB microLED displays on 300mm wafers.
The CEO of Micledi is Sean Lord who was the CTO of a microLED start-up that was acquired by Facebook in 2016. (InfiniLED Bought by Oculus)
What We Think
Imec has a long history in microdisplays. As long ago as 2006, the Gemidis spin-out was supplying LCOS microdisplays for simulation and reported as being used by Barco at the time. It also had an 11 megapixel micromirror display in 2008 (Display Monitor Vol 15 No 49). (BR)
