What They Say
The Chosun reports that high demand for TVs based on the panel have meant that LG plans to expand the production of 48″ OLEDs from 220KK in 2020 to one million this year. The paper reports that rather than making two 77″ and two 48″ panels in its Guangzhou fab, LGD will make 8-up 48″ panels at its Paju plant.
The report also highlights that demand from gamers is also driving demand such that 48″ sets can sell for higher prices than 55″ sets.
What We Think
LG Display decided to make the smaller panels because of demand from European and Japanese TV brands and announced that it would add a smaller size than 55″ at its OLED Day in Munich a couple of years ago. As we have often reported, larger sets are not so popular in these regions because of room design and the size of living accommodation. It’s not a question of price. Whenever I need to see what is happening in TV pricing in the UK, I look at Richer Sounds. That firm is listing four 55″ sets at cheaper prices than its cheapest 48″ set. (BR)
