What They Say
The Korea Herald said that ‘according to industry sources’, Samsung, Apple and Huawei are planning new foldable devices. The Mate X2 from Huawei is due to be launched at MWC Shanghai, which is said to be an infolding design ‘similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series’. The report said that the display will be an 8.01″ OLED from BOE with 2480 x 2200 resolution and 120Hz support. When folded it will be 6.45″.
Samsung will announce a Galaxy Z Flip3 and Galaxy Z Fold3 this summer, with Fold3 using an S pen stylus.
The paper also said that Apple is developing this kind of flip phone, that would unfold to the 6.7″ size of an iPhone 12 Pro Max, probably in 2023.
A prediction from Counterpoint Research, quoted in the paper, forecast that 2.8 million sales last year would rise to 5.6 million this year.
What We Think
Although Apple has taken its time to ensure that the full experience of new products can be reliably delivered to its customers, the value of the folding smartphone market will be irresistible to the firm. (BR)
