Yoeri Geutskens has updated his venn diagram which shows who is doing what in HDR. He has also written an interesting article that highlights that although HDR10 is well specified in terms of how content is created and transmitted (ST-2084 with ST-2086 static metadata, 10-bit colour and BT.2020 colour space), what happens when that data gets to the set is not mandated, so sets can simply accept the metadata, but ignore it.
Geutskens suggests that the term PQ10 should be more used as that term is the same as HDR10, but without the metadata.
Analyst Comment
This kind of problem is not new for consumer products. There will be a lot of HDR compatible sets that won’t deliver an HDR experience because the display simply can’t give the dynamic range needed. (BR)
