Blackmagic Design, which specialises in broadcast and content creation components, has introduced a new external GPU that has been designed in collaboration with Apple and is built around a Radeon Pro 580 and the device has two Thunderbolt 3 ports as well as HDMI 2.0. The eGPU can provide 85 of charging power to allow it to act as a charging dock for a PC.
The video memory is 8GB and support is listed for MacOS (the company doesn’t list support for Windows). DaVinci Resolve 15 from BlackMagic can support multiple GPUs, the company said. The unit is very quiet (just 18db).
The unit costs $699 and is being sold on Apple.com and in some Apple retail stores.
Analyst Comment
We have previously reported that Apple seemed to be very interested in the concept of eGPUs, so the collaboration with Blackmagic is not really surprising (Apple Says No New Mac Pro Until 2019). AppleInsider said that as well as Thunderbolt monitors, the eGPU supports USB Type-C monitors – at least the LG Apple one. (BR)
