The new version of Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed reality headset — currently codenamed Sydney — is rumoured to be scheduled for a release during the first quarter of 2019.
The device is said to incorporate improved holographic displays and a combination of Microsoft’s AI technology, Project Azure, with Kinect hardware. Project Kinect for Azure is said to enhance the device’s movement tracking and spatial mapping capabilities.
A new HoloLens was originally scheduled for release in 2017 but Microsoft elected to skip the generation entirely and focus its attention on HoloLens “v3”. The new device is also rumoured to be priced significantly lower than its predecessor.
