Ofcom has published its latest Home Broadband Performance report, revealing that average broadband download speeds in the UK increased by 28%, up to 46.2Mbps in 2017, while upload speeds increased by 32%, up to 6.2Mbps. Many households are also able to receive better broadband speeds by upgrading their package.

Superfast broadband is now available in 92% of homes in the UK, though about 40% are still on standard ADSL services, experiencing average speeds of around 10Mbps when they could be getting over 70Mbps. Of the available services, Virgin Media’s “up to 200Mbps” package achieved the fastest download speeds in the country in 2017. Broadband households also experienced fewer instances of peak slowdown in 2017, compared to 2016.

Meanwhile, Ofcom’s Consumer Mobile Experience surveyed 5,000 users that agreed to install a research app on their Android smartphones. 92% of those surveyed said that they prioritised browsing the web on their mobile devices over making calls. 75% of mobile internet connections were made via Wi-Fi, as opposed to a cellular network, while connection success rates were 93% on 3G networks and 99% in areas with 4G. 84% said they were satisfied with their mobile provider’s internet service.
