Google is developing a computer-vision-based method of positional tracking, allowing 6DoF controller tracking without active markers or any additional hardware. Of the VR headsets released — or slated for release — this year, Lenovo’s Mirage Solo and HTC Vive Focus are both limited to rotational controller tracking.
The Oculus Santa Cruz features 6DoF controller tracking, but uses extra hardware, including cameras and IR markers. In a research paper detailing the new technology, Google commented that 6DoF controller tracking has not yet been properly adopted due to hardware costs and limitations. This new technology uses computer-vision to track movements.
