Renesas has announced the R-Car 3D chip which is designed to support 3D graphics in car dashboards at a system cost that is said to be at the same level as 2D. It is said to be six times faster than the R-Car D1. The D3 chip can support software and graphics assets from the R-Car H3 or R-Car M3 SoCs, allowing car makers, Renesas claimed, to move high end 3D graphics down to entry level vehicles.
The chip is based around an Arm Cortex-A53 CPU with an Imagination PowerVR Series8XE GE8300 GPU and it supports DDR3 RAM. There are dual display outputs (Display Out x 2ch (LVDS x 2 or LVDS + Digital RGB) and a video input. The chip can support either a 1920 x 720 single display or a main display at 1280 x 720, with a 7″ or 8″ HUD at 800 x 480, via the video output.
