Insight Media’s Chris Chinnock, has written a white paper endorsing a proposal by Samsung to change the way that resolution is measured to make measurements more meaningful now that there is an increasing variety of different schemes and architectures including, for example, sub-pixel rendering. The traditional measurement methods worked well enough on systems that have discrete and clear pixels, but not so well on other displays.
The new method is based on Structural Similarity (SSIM) which compares the original and displayed image and is used in a more expanded way to measure other image processing techniques such as compression.
