Toshiba Shows TV Line at IFA

The Toshiba brand is licensed in Europe to Vestel, which had a separate area for the brand from its main booth. We have reported separately on the Vestel part of the booth (Vestel to Offer HDR TVs – Updates LFD Range)

The company used IFA 2017 to show off its current lines of TVs as well as some design concepts for next year. In OLED TVs, Toshiba offers the X9 series in 55″ and 65″ screen sizes. These feature HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support along with a wide color gamut. The 55″ is expected to come to market in Q4 with a price of €1,699.

In LCD TVs, the U7 series is a mid-range series of UHD TVs with edge-lit BLUs and front-facing speakers. These are listed as wide color gamut TVs with HDR10 and HLG support offered in 49″ and 55″ screen sizes.

The 4K U6 line is offered in 43″, 49″, 50″, 55″, 65″ and 75″ screen sizes and feature direct backlights, but only with global dimming – and they are not wide color gamut TVs either even though they support HDR10 and HLG.

Both the U6 and U7 lines appear to have luminance values in the 300-400 cd/m² range so are little more than SDR TVs with HDR decoding.

In next generation concepts, Toshiba showed a borderless TV, a wide color gamut demo with 99% of DCI-P3 coverage (typical of the X9 and U7 series) and a Poster TV concept which featured a 65″ TV that is designed to be hung on the wall like a piece of artwork. The company is looking at Amazon’s Alexa technology as the solution for voice control of its sets.

Toshiba itself had only a tiny booth that was highlighting its memory components. There were no PCs as the company tries to market these to business users at the moment.
