Market researcher, CCS, predicts that the sales of VR headsets will reach 16.5 million this year, valued at over $500 million, with sales growing to 72 million by 2020. That number includes smartphone VR devices which will reach 14.5 million. Fully dedicated headsets such as the HTC Vive will hit 2 million this year and rise to 21 million by 2020. The market will get a boost from the Sony PlayStation VR launch. The company also said that the value of augmented reality headsets will hit $1.7 billion in 2017 and the technology is seeing good take up in Europe in professional applications. The market for AR headsets is forecast to reach 7 million by 2020 with a market value of $3.8 billion.
CSS quotes Google as saying there were more than 50 million installations of the Cardboard application, up from 25 million in January, and Oculus said that there are more than 1 million monthly active users of the Samsung Gear VR. 360 degree content is also booming with more than 250K videos now uploaded to Facebook.
