Dell Wants to Consolidate Monitors

Dell’s huge new display, which has a diagonal of 43″, is aptly known as the ‘Multi-Client Monitor’ (aka P4317Q), due to its ability to show up to four separate sources at the same time. The firm, hopes that the screen can replace existing multi-monitor set-ups (it also supports picture-in-picture).

Inputs can be manipulated (rearranged or zoomed in on) using the in-built Dell Display Manager. To make the display suitable for IT users, Dell has built in multiple ports (DisplayPort, mDP, HDMI 1.4 (x2, with MHL), VGA, USB 3.0 (x4), USB-B and RS232).

An IPS panel is used in the display, with UltraHD resolution, 178° viewing angles, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 8ms (g2g) response time. Refresh rate is 60Hz, but this is only achievable in UltraHD using DisplayPort. Brightness is 350 cd/m².

The monitor supports 10-bit colour. Dell quoted coverage of 82% of the CIE 1976 colour space (72% CIE 1931) (although it is strange to give a CIE figure – TA). It also has two 8W speakers. Dell is selling the unit now, for $1,350.

Analyst Comment

So far, MMD has been the main supplier of this kind of monitor, although its product looked very much like a converted TV. Although the height of this display is likely to be too big for comfortable all day use by mainstream users, specialists that have to have this amount of data may be prepared to accept it, especially if they have previously used multiple monitors.
