Huawei unexpectedly announced its new smartphone, the Mate X5. It serves as a successor to the Mate X3, with many internal improvements while retaining a similar design. The Mate X5 has a 7.85-inch LTPO OLED main display and a 6.4-inch LTPO OLED cover display, both protected by Kunlun Glass.
The Collector’s Edition of the Mate X5 comes with a peak brightness of 1800 nits for both internal and external screens, significantly surpassing the Mate X3. Interestingly, the external screen brightness is adaptive, adjusting between 1-1800 nits based on picture content and ambient lighting. The Collector’s Edition also includes Basalt tempered Kunlun glass on the external screen while other versions will utilize the standard Kunlun glass.
Kunlun glass is the Chinese competitor to Corning and is manufactured by Chongqing Xinjing Special Glass Co., Ltd. It is a type of super-ceramic crystal and is a transparent nano-ceramic glass. The manufacturer boasts it has a drop resistance ten times higher than ordinary glass and Huawei has helped to position it against Corning through its use and by comparison to Gorilla Glass in Apple products.
Both the internal and external screens of the Collector’s Edition, as well as the external screens of the standard Mate X5, will support 1-120 Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rates. However, there will be variations depending on the memory version of the phone. The 16 GB memory variant’s internal screen boasts a 1-120 Hz LTPO refresh rate, while other memory versions use a 60/90/120 Hz LTPS adaptive refresh rate.
