SDC Prepares for Transparent and Mirror Rollout

Samsung Display unveiled its 55″ transparent and mirrored OLED products in June last year, as part of an exhibit at the Hong Kong Convention Centre. Since then, we have seen them at shows including IFA, CES, ISE and PTE. The firm has now announced names and a release date for both products.

Both models have 150 cd/m² of brightness and ‘up to’ 100% Adobe RGB coverage. The transparent display has 45% transmittance and the mirror display has 75% reflectance.

The mirror (ML55E) and transparent (TO55E) OLED products will be available to display makers in Q2’16. Prices have not been shared.

At Passenger Terminal Expo, Data Modul was showing it’s version of the transparent display, while Samsung Electronics was showing a mirror display at CeBIT. I have seen at least seven different companies with prototypes and samples of the transparent display over the last year or so. As I mentioned in the report from Electronic Displays, it seems to me that Samsung is developing this market partly because it will be something of a niche. There won’t be huge volume and it can start to ramp up its volume. Later, it will want to make high volume transparent TVs and windscreens. (BR)
