HSBC has said that the pressure on Samsung’s smartphone business may lead the firm to bring forward its plans for a foldable OLED smartphone from 2017 to late 2016. (Rumors: Devices with Foldable Displays are Coming Soon?)

On the other hand, the OLED Association reckons this will take a lot longer and I’m with Barry Young of the OLED Association on this. Although Samsung Display has had very compelling demonstrations of foldable display-based design concepts for two years, at CES this year there was only one sample, which was actually faulty. If Apple were to go for flexible OLEDs, supply is likely to be limited for several years and it would be surprising to see Samsung committing a lot of resource, when it will not be able to deliver very many.
