Phablet Popularity Soars

Flurry Analytics has examined data from more than 780,000 apps, worldwide, to determine which devices were popular gifts over the Christmas period.

Apple was the big winner in Christmas 2015, accounting for 49.1% of all new mobile device (smartphone, phablet and tablet) activations between the 19th and 25th December. The next most popular manufacturer, Samsung, was responsible for 19.8% of devices, followed by Nokia at 2%, LG at 1.7% and Xiaomi at 1.5%.

27% of all new devices were phablets (5″ – 6.9″), up from 13% in 2014 and 4% in 2013. 1% were ‘small phones’ (sub-3.5″), 54% were ‘medium phones’ (3.5″ – 4.9″), 9% were ‘small tablets’ (7″ – 8.4″) and 9% were ‘large tablets’ (8.4″+). The trend shows some movement away from tablets, and significant movement from medium-size smartphones, towards phablets.

Analyst Comment

Xiaomi’s inclusion in the metrics is significant, as it displaced Sony in Christmas week – even through that is not the biggest gifting day of the year in China. (TA)
